Solar Power and Battery Backup = Grid Independence

The concept of gaining energy independence with solar and battery storage is exciting.  What exactly does that mean, and what does it take to get there?

Having an energy independent home means producing and storing your own electricity.  This allows you to minimize your reliance on grid electricity from a utility.

Solar Power and Battery Backup – Benefits of Energy Independence

There’s an endless list of personal, political, and economic reasons to strive for energy independence. Here are a few that stand out:

  • First, you’ll no longer be subject to utility rate increases since you’ll be in complete control of how you source the power you need
  • Second, peace of mind of knowing exactly where your power is coming from
  • Third, the energy you’re consuming will be 100% renewable, unlike power sourced from utility companies that still rely on fossil fuels
  • Lastly, provide your own backup power during power outages

Homeowner Story - Ultimate Backup

The desire for energy independence was by far the most motivating factor for installing solar panels. Following closely are cost savings (66.3%), government incentives (56.3%) and environmental concerns (50.2%) (forbes.com)

How Do Home Battery Backups Work?

To begin, as direct current electricity is produced from your solar panels, it runs to an inverter which converts direct current into alternating current electricity and then goes to your breaker box to power your home.

Next, a home solar battery can be installed after the inverter, which allows the battery to decide how electricity is regulated. This system is known as AC coupling and is typically easier to install, though it’s slightly less efficient than DC coupling, as you’ll discover.

Then, in DC-coupled systems, a charge controller may be implemented after solar collection.  This regulates voltage and current, and allows energy to flow from your PV panel directly to the battery. DC coupling is typically the most efficient because it only requires electricity to be transmitted from DC to AC once it hits the inverter.

To summarize, both systems are relatively efficient, but we should note that AC coupling is easier to install and allows for energy storage from grid electricity.

Regarding physical batteries, most solar backup systems use lithium-ion batteries, which are the same type of battery you use in your phones.

Lead-acid batteries are also available for home solar backup storage, but they typically have lower lifespans and a much smaller depth of charge (DoD).

Researching your battery’s DoD, lifespan, and how it’s installed is essential in deciding which solar battery backup suits you.

Solar Panels

When the sun shines onto a solar panel, photons from the sunlight are absorbed by the cells in the panel. This creates an electric field across the layers and causes electricity to flow.

Inverters

Inverters converts the direct current, or DC, electricity generated by your solar panels into alternating current, or AC, electricity that your appliances can use.

Batteries

Without solar batteries, even a house covered in photovoltaic panels will leave homeowners literally powerless when the grid goes down.

Green Energy

As a renewable source of power, solar energy has an important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change, which is critical to protecting humans, wildlife, and ecosystems.

Environmentally Conscious

Solar energy can also improve air quality, reduce water use from energy production, and provide ecosystem services for host communities through carbon sequestration, pollination, and ground and stormwater management.

No Rate Increases

In the past, you had no option but to accept the ever-increasing bills. Today, solar energy is an alternative. With solar panels on your rooftop, you can spend less on your utility bill and even get paid for some of the energy produced by your home.

Grid Independence

Adding solar panels to your home will almost immediately start paying off by reducing or even eliminating the power you need from the grid.

Community Leader

As pioneering cities are showing, civic engagement is an important part of the effort to make solar energy more viable and better accepted in American communities.

The takeaway, grid independence is achieved when consumers can rely on their energy generation to handle all their energy needs.

Until recently, the idea of grid independence was reserved for fiction.

However, modern-day Solar Power and Battery Backup systems have offered consumers a reliable means to rely entirely on their electrical production without help from the grid.

The Self-Reinforcing Nature of The Clean Energy Life

Solar Power

The increasing use of solar energy is a positive step towards a cleaner, greener future. However, for solar energy to become a truly viable option for power generation, there needs to be a way to store the energy generated during peak hours for use during off-peak hours. This is where solar storage batteries come in, playing a critical role in increasing energy independence.

Solar storage batteries are essentially large batteries that store the energy generated by solar panels during the day, making them available for use during the night or during periods of low solar generation.

Are electrical companies required to have insurance?
Yes, electrical companies are required to have insurance to protect themselves and their clients in case of accidents or damages. This includes liability insurance, which covers any damages or injuries caused by the electrician or their work, and workers’ compensation insurance, which covers any injuries the electrician may sustain while working on the job.
What is the average cost of electrical services?
Generally, electricians charge an hourly rate, and the total cost will depend on how many hours of work are needed. Some companies may also offer flat-rate pricing for certain services, such as installing a new electrical panel or replacing a circuit breaker.
How can I find a reliable electrical company?
To find a reliable electrical company, you can start by asking for recommendations from friends, family, or neighbors who have had positive experiences with electrical contractors. You can also search online for reviews and ratings of local electrical companies, and check their credentials and licenses to ensure they are qualified and certified to perform electrical work.
How often should I have my electrical system inspected by an electrical company?
It is recommended that you have your electrical system inspected by a professional electrical company at least once every 5 years. However, if you are experiencing electrical problems or live in an older home, more frequent inspections may be necessary. It’s always better to be proactive and have your electrical system inspected before a problem occurs.
What is the cost of electrical services?
The cost of electrical services can vary depending on the type of service, the complexity of the job, and the location. It’s best to get a written estimate from a licensed electrician or electrical service provider before starting any work to understand the cost.
How often should I have my electrical system inspected?
It’s recommended to have your electrical system inspected by a licensed electrician every 3-5 years, or more frequently if you have an older home or notice any electrical issues. Regular inspections can help identify potential hazards and prevent electrical problems before they occur.
Can I perform my own electrical repairs or installations?
It’s generally not recommended for homeowners to perform their own electrical repairs or installations unless they are licensed electricians. DIY electrical work can be dangerous and can result in property damage, personal injury, or even death. It’s best to hire a qualified and licensed electrician for any electrical work.
What should I do if I experience an electrical emergency?
In the event of an electrical emergency, such as a power outage, electrical fire, or electrical shock, the first step is to turn off the power at the main circuit breaker or fuse box. Then, contact a licensed electrician or emergency electrical service provider immediately for assistance.
What are some common electrical issues that electrical companies can help me resolve?
Electrical companies can help with a variety of common electrical issues such as power outages, circuit breaker trips, faulty wiring, and malfunctioning electrical appliances. They can also assist with electrical upgrades and installations such as installing new lighting or ceiling fans.
How can I ensure that the electrical company I hire is licensed and insured?
You can check the licensing and insurance status of an electrical company by asking for their license and insurance certificates. You can also verify their status with your state or local licensing board and insurance agency.
How do I choose the right electrical company for my needs?
To choose the right electrical company for your needs, it’s important to do your research. Look for a company with a good reputation, positive customer reviews, and experience in the type of electrical work you require. Make sure the company is licensed and insured, and ask for a detailed quote before agreeing to any work.
