Home electrical safety

5 ways to prevent electric shock at home.

Prevent electric shock at home by taking visible warning signs seriously, keeping wet areas protected, and scheduling licensed electrical repair when outlets, GFCIs, breakers, or panels behave strangely.

1. Respect wet areas

Water and electricity need extra protection.

  • Use GFCI protection where required in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, outdoors, and other wet areas.
  • Do not use damaged cords or devices near water.
  • Book service when a GFCI will not reset or trips repeatedly.

2. Stop using damaged devices

Small damage can point to bigger risk.

  • Replace cracked covers and loose receptacles.
  • Stop using cords, plugs, outlets, or switches that feel hot.
  • Call for buzzing, sparking, discoloration, or burning smell.

3. Let breakers do their job

A breaker trip is information.

  • Do not tape, force, or repeatedly reset a tripping breaker.
  • Write down what was running when the trip happened.
  • Schedule repair if the trip repeats or feels unsafe.

4. Keep panels closed

Electrical panels contain dangerous live parts.

  • Do not remove panel covers for DIY testing.
  • Keep the panel area accessible and dry.
  • Call a licensed electrician for heat, rust, buzzing, or repeated trips.

5. Upgrade older problem areas

Older outlets and circuits may not fit modern loads.

  • Ask about grounded outlets, GFCI protection, dedicated circuits, and rewiring where needed.
  • Plan panel capacity before adding large loads.
  • Use Shepherd Electrical for safety upgrades that match the actual home.

When to schedule

When in doubt, let Shepherd Electrical look at it.

Electrical issues can hide behind normal-looking devices. If a breaker repeats, a GFCI will not reset, an outlet is warm, or a panel feels overloaded, schedule service instead of guessing.

For smoke, burning smell, visible arcing, shock risk, or heat at the panel or outlet, stop using that circuit and call/text (405) 406-1026. If there is immediate danger, call 911.
